Gone are the days of giving paper or cotton for a first or second anniversary. With the changing times, the anniversary gift etiquette has changed. As society moves more towards affluence, so do the gifts that define us. Of course, you can always just choose something you deem appropriate, something that is truly thoughtful and from the heart. Modern anniversary gifts take into account the changing desires of society, especially in terms of when gifts are given. Instead of paper for a first anniversary, the modern gift is a clock. For the second it is china, and for the third it is crystal or glass. This is a move away from supplying things considered essential for the running of a household (paper, cotton, leather). For the fourth anniversaries we give appliances rather than fruit or flowers, and silverware has replaced wood on the fifth anniversary. Wood has not been dropped, though; it has just moved on to the sixth anniversary substituting candy or iron. However, it is usually in the form of decorative or antique pieces rather than utility objects like a wooden chair. The seventh anniversary gift typically reflects our increasing focus on business in the form of desk sets instead of Wool and copper. For the eighth anniversary, bronze or pottery are out and the trend is for linens and lace that reflect our increased sense of luxury. And leather has taken the place of gifts made from willow for the ninth anniversary. Jewelry, in the traditional anniversary gifts, did not figure until the 25th anniversary. Now, the 10th anniversary is marked with diamond jewelry. It may not be exorbitantly priced, but the jump to diamonds at the 10th is a reflection on the increase in the divorce rate. Ten years of married life is considered a great accomplishment in today's world. Through the years, modern gifts continue to be more expensive than their traditional counterparts. Fashion jewelry marks the 11th anniversary and pearls mark the 12th (traditionally the 30th). Textiles and furs are gifts for the 13th anniversary, gold jewelry for the 14th and watches for the 15th. Matching "his" and "hers" watches are received by many couples. There is a skip to the 20th anniversary from the 15th as far as gift giving goes, and for the 20th it is platinum. But after that the modern anniversary gifts start to fall back in line a little bit with the more traditional, even though traditionally the 20th was a gift of china. For both 25th anniversaries, the gift is silver, but at the 30th there is some difference: modern is diamond and traditional is pearl. The last variance comes at the 35th. Modern gift giving is jade while traditional was coral. For the rest of the anniversary gifts, the modern etiquette has remained in step with the traditional etiquette: ruby for the 40th, sapphire for the 45th, gold for the 50th, emerald for the 55th and diamond for the 60th.
